As general contractors, attention to detail and quality construction are our top priorities, and we work to instill confidence and trust in our customers. Company founders Chris Stone and Robert Montgomery are both personally involved in each project. We are a “hands on” construction company.
The “Stone-Montgomery family,” as we like to call our faithful crew of design and construction experts, are just that: a family. We work together to bring your construction dreams to life.
Stone-Montgomery was founded June 6, 1990 as a general contracting company specializing in residential and commercial construction and remodeling in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and surrounding areas of North Carolina including New Hanover County, Leland, and Hampstead.
Chris Stone, a lifelong resident of Wrightsville Beach, began his career building alongside his father, a local homebuilder and developer. After years of managing large-scale projects at Reagan Construction, Chris partnered with Robert Montgomery to bring their vision of Stone-Montgomery to life. Robert, who also started in construction during college, honed his skills as a superintendent at Reagan Construction, overseeing both new builds and renovation projects.
Together, Chris and Robert built Stone-Montgomery into a trusted name in Wilmington and surrounding areas, specializing in custom homes, remodeling, and commercial construction. The founders of Stone Montgomery's commitment to excellence continues to shape every project today.

Stone-Montgomery Stone-Montgomery Construction was founded on June 6, 1990, by Chris Stone and Robert Montgomery, two experienced builders with a shared passion for quality craftsmanship. Drawing on over 50 years of combined experience in commercial and residential construction, they established a company rooted in integrity, meticulous attention to detail, and a dedication to customer satisfaction.

For Josh Stone, construction isn’t just a career—it’s a way of life. Growing up in a family steeped in the building industry, with both grandfathers and his father deeply involved, Josh embraced the legacy from an early age. By the age of six, he was spending summers and school breaks alongside his father, gaining hands-on experience and developing a lifelong respect for quality craftsmanship.
Josh officially joined Stone-Montgomery full-time in 2001, starting as a helper and working his way up through roles as a carpenter and lead man under the guidance of Robert Montgomery. This mentorship not only honed his skills but also reinforced the family values that remain at the heart of the business.
Following his father’s passing in 2014, Josh stepped into a leadership role as a 50% owner. Today, as the sole owner of Stone-Montgomery, Josh is dedicated to continuing the company’s tradition of excellence. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and open, honest communication, Josh prioritizes building relationships with homeowners that last long after the project is complete. His unwavering commitment to quality and trust has earned him respect in the industry and among the clients he proudly serves.
